About BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.
BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity. BMI does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI correlates with more direct measures of body fat.
BMI Categories:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 - 24.9: Normal weight
- 25 - 29.9: Overweight
- 30 - 34.9: Obesity (Class 1)
- 35 - 39.9: Obesity (Class 2)
- 40 and above: Extreme Obesity (Class 3)
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity for most people, but it does have limitations:
- It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others with muscular builds
- It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle
- It doesn't account for differences in body composition based on gender, race, or age
- It doesn't provide information about the distribution of body fat
